Description:

Featured disc! The virtuoso Collins plays basset clarinet! Mozart Concerto, Quintet and a concerto dedicated to Collins by the English composer Birchall! Clarinet prodigy Michael Collins recorded Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Clarinet Quintet! The coupling is a concerto by English composer Richard Birchall. Mozart composed for Anton Stadler (1753-1812), a master of his time, and Virtual composed for Collins. This is a remarkable work that combines pieces dedicated to each of these master composers. All instruments are played on basset clarinets. This instrument is unique in that it can produce a range of up to four lower notes (Es, D, Des, and C) than the A clarinet. Stadler, who was a master of the basset horn, played the basset clarinet, which can produce the same range, and a masterpiece was born. The Clarinet Quintet is performed by the Wigmore Soloists, a variable ensemble formed in 2020 by Collins and Isabelle van Keulen. In this performance, Isabelle van Keulen plays viola, Alexander Sitkovetsky plays first violin, and Alfred Brendel's son, Adrian, plays cello, in a performance by an ensemble of master musicians. is a musician who studied at Cambridge University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, was a cellist with the Philharmonic Orchestra until 2010, and is currently building a varied career as a composer and arranger, with a cello concerto, "Labyrinth," for narrative and cello octet, "Wonderland Alice in Wonderland" for narrative and cello octet. The Concerto for Basset Clarinet and Orchestra, dedicated to Collins in 2020, is in three movements (I. Metamorphosis, II. Still Life, III. Impossible Construction) and runs for about 20 minutes. The interplay between the basset clarinet and the orchestra is quite fascinating. The basset clarinet and orchestra intertwine with each other in a fascinating way. The range that only this instrument can produce appears throughout the piece, and Collins plays with great emotion. King International
