Tyler Futrell is an Oslo-based composer from Northern California, USA, whose works are in a variety of styles and elements. He studied with Lee Hyla at the New England Conservatory, Bent Saansen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and Mikael Jarrell at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna before moving to Oslo where he received his Norwegian citizenship. His compositions draw from a wide variety of influences and inspirations: musique concrete, minimalism derived from religious music, late romanticism, spectral music, formalism, and contemporary dance and theater music.Furtrell's works have been performed by ensembles from many countries, including the Norwegian Soloist Choir, Trondheim Soloists, BIT20, Telemark Chamber Orchestra, and Ateras Sinfonietta. Futrelle's "Stabat Mater" was composed from the same text of the Catholic chant "Our Lady of Sorrows" as works by Pergolesi and Palestrina. The chapters from "Our Lady of Sorrows, in tears," to "When the body perishes," are interwoven with a lullaby from the medieval Polish planctus "Lamentswietokrzyski" and preludes and interludes for solo soprano and mezzo-soprano, strings and harpsichord. Commissioned by Lars-Erik Ter-Jung and the Ter-Jung Ensemble, it was premiered at the Oslo International Church Music Festival in 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The work contains "metaphor" pages from Brahms' "Lullaby" (Op. 49 No. 4), Gretzky's "Third Symphony" and Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" and is said to have raised the questions "Why is it so beautiful?" and "Can we tolerate this beauty? Lullaby" for cello duet is a meditation on Brahms's "Lullaby" quoted in "Stabat Mater. Brittle Fluid" is thematically related to "Stabat Mater. Commissioned by Ter-Jung when he was artistic director of the Telemark Chamber Orchestra, the piece was renamed from "Is-slotet" (The Ice Palace) to "Frozen Waterfall," a reference to the novel by Norwegian author Tarij Vaesuoth. Composed for "14 string ensemble," Fewtrell himself arranged the "11" version to fit the Terjung Ensemble's compositions, and it was used for the performance on this album. (King International)
