John Neschling's series of orchestral works by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) is now gathered into a seven-disc bargain set. Apart from the Roman Trilogy, recorded with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, the performances are with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. The series has been widely praised - BBC Music Magazine called it "the finest Respighi orchestral series by a single conductor" - and it lets you savour Respighi's exceptional sense of colour and orchestration to the full. Respighi worked within the currents of Romanticism, Impressionism and Neoclassicism in early modern Italy while creating a world entirely his own, making telling use of percussion, piano and organ. His music was carried on into Hollywood film scores, and John Williams has described Respighi as "one of the most important influences on me". He was also a gifted arranger, producing orchestral versions of works by J.S. Bach and Rachmaninov. His treatment of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in D major BWV 532 turns an already virtuosic and glittering original into something three-dimensional and sumptuous, and the way the subject is tossed between woodwind, brass, strings and piano is thoroughly entertaining. The Passacaglia is equally impressive, recasting the supreme set of variations over a bass subject as a colourful piece that calls the Roman Trilogy to mind. The Three Chorales form a three-movement suite from the Leipzig chorale "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" and the Schübler chorales "Meine Seele erhebt den Herren" and "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme". The Rachmaninov is another highlight: Respighi selected five numbers from the two books of Études-tableaux, Opp. 33 and 39, and arranged them as a suite. Born in São Paulo in 1947, the Brazilian conductor John Neschling is a remarkable figure descended from Artur Bodanzky and Arnold Schoenberg, and studied with Leonard Bernstein and Hans Swarowsky.
