Description:

Master musician Nämé Järvi shakes up this collection of works by Steenhammer, a central figure in Swedish music at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century! Wilhelm Steenhammer (1871-1927) was one of Sweden's most important composers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A respected pianist and conductor, his works include two piano concertos, a symphony, six string quartets, songs, and a large choral work with orchestra, all of which are widely loved by the public. Steenhammer is often called a "song writer" because his music is characterized more by melodic character than by harmonic originality. His "melodies" are full of fine nuance and have been likened to the most delicate recitation of poetry. The symphonic cantata En symfonisk kantat (Song) for "four solo singers, mixed chorus, children's chorus, and orchestra" was composed in 1921 for the 150th anniversary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.Composer Thure Langström (1884-1947) wrote the poems, the first part "Min sang, mitt land - du mina sangers land! (Min sang, mitt land - du mina sangers land!)" and the second part "The temple shines. Rymder ljuda." The song "Summer Days" by Adolf Fredrik Lindblad (1801-1878) is a tribute to the first great songwriter of "Sweden, the Land of Song". Ensommardag" by Adolf Fredrik Lindblad (1801-1878) is quoted as a "motif" in this piece. The "Interlude (Mellanspel)" at the beginning of the second part is a beautiful "molto adagio, sorenne" music, born of Steenhammer's warm humanity, and is performed as a stand-alone work. This is a new recording by "Steenhammar's Orchestra" and Naeeme Järvi, a member of the Royal Academy of Music. All of the music on this album was written after Steenhammer moved to Gothenburg in 1907 to assume the position of chief conductor of the fledgling symphony orchestra. The music for "Romeo and Juliet" performed by director Per Lindberg at the Gothenburg Theater is a piece of incidental music written for the play by Strindberg, Jalmar Berriman, Tagore, Shakespeare, and Gozzi. Composer Hilding Rusenberg (1892-1985) has arranged a suite of five pieces: Pastorale, Corrente, Gavotte, Petters pipa, and Sarabanda. The five suite versions will be performed. The "Reverenza" (Italian for "reverence, respect") was originally composed as the second movement of the first draft of the "Serenade" and was omitted in the 1919 revision. The music is said to pay homage to the "scherzo" tradition of Viennese classical music. The "Two Sentimental Romances," one lyrical in A major and the other passionate in F minor, were premiered in Gothenburg in 1911 at the last concert given by violinist Thur Aulin, with whom Steenhammer had a long friendship, in front of an audience. The soloist on this recording, Sara Troubek (1978-), is the first concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Her instrument is G.B. Gadanini (Parma 1753); she was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Music in 2008. King International
