This SACD hybrid disc traces the great development of cello music, from the early works of the 17th century cello to Boccherini, who established a new peak in the history of cello music. Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann studied modern cello at Toho Gakuen School of Music and later studied baroque cello and viola da gamba at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He is a talented old musician who has performed as a soloist with La Petite Bande, Bach Collegium Japan, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Galli, Antoni, and Gabrieli are from the earliest period of cello music. The tuning of works from this period was different from that of today, with the first string set to g. In Gabrielli's works, the tuning is the same as that of today's cellos. In Gabrieli's works, we can hear the heavy notes that make the most of this tuning.Listening to the recordings in order, one is very surprised by the eloquence of the singing and the innovative heightening of technique in the two Boccherini sonatas. The music is truly delightful, such as the last movement of the B-flat major sonata, with its drone-like heavy notes and fast playing in the upper register to great effect. The free movement of sound and the scale of the music are mesmerizing, with absolutely no sense of the limitations of the instruments. King International
