The Emperor Quartet's third collection of string quartets by Britten, one of the most famous English composers of the 20th century, features works for string quartet composed before the age of 20, including his early masterpiece, Simple Symphony Op.4. Simple Symphony Op.4 was composed when Britten was 20 years old and consists of four movements for string orchestra or string quartet (I. "Noisy Bray," II. "Merry Pizzicato," III. "Sentimental Sarabande," IV. The second piece, "Merry Pizzicato," is especially impressive. The Small String Quartet is so complete that it is hard to believe that it was composed at the age of 16, and it is a powerful work without being overly familiar.The Emperors Quartet, Britain's most promising and talented quartet, is a lively, dynamic, and precise ensemble.
