Description:
Violinist Rudolf Kehlmann, born in the Netherlands in 1959, was a student of Heifetz from 1978 to 1981 and is considered one of Heifetz's last disciples. He was concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1996 to 1999, and has been active internationally since then, and is currently teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts. This is the second Prokofiev release on the Challenge Classics label. The first concerto is in D major, a bright and brilliant key characteristic of the violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, but at the same time it is a unique work with dreamlike and fantastic harmony. The beautiful lyricism and buoyancy of the two end movements are exquisite and irresistible, as is the technical solo flourish in the second movement, the Scherzo. Kehlmann's solo is superb, capturing the delicate and colorful expression of the work.The second piece is a slow, prayerful, and sincere performance from the opening monologue melody. It would be interesting to compare the two recordings, as Heifetz, Kehlmann's teacher, also has a masterpiece. King International
