This is the 10th commemorative album by ECM Records' most beautiful melodic pianist, who celebrated his 55th anniversary this year. Norwegian pianist Thord Gustafsen commented on the album, "It reflects my personal growth as I have grown older and have begun to pursue the essence of life and music. Through five Gustafsen originals, two Johann Sebastian Bach choral pieces, a traditional Norwegian church hymn, and the 19th-century English choral piece "Near My God, to Thee," Tordo will be joined by longtime friends Jarre Vespesta (ds), Stainer Raknes ( double-b), Toldo delves deep into his own unique blend of jazz, blues, gospel, Scandinavian folk, and church music. The group's interplay, which, as Toldo himself says, "is all about melody," draws strength from restraint, patiently but simply building the music to its climax. The pianist, meanwhile, is an accomplished master of the trio format, leading with a delicate touch and subtle gospel brilliance. Seeing is strongly marked not only by a seductive down-home feeling, but also by what Toldo calls "an efficiency of form. He says, "You won't find many large-scale solos on this album. Instead, I tried to 'maximize' the basic details by pouring musicality into the interplay and formation of small improvised parts. In doing so, the album is a cool contrast to the more recent live concerts, which often feature more grandiose forms, lengthy suites, several themes combined into one, or lengthy free improvisations. But what the album has in common is that instead of following a plan or a script, it seeks to do what feels more vibratory and essential in the moment. Particularly interesting is the counterpoint work between bass and piano and the warm, wooden, full sound of the double bass," he also commented. Recorded in the fall of 2023 at Studio La Buissonne in the south of France under the production of Manfred Eicher, this is one of the powerful works to mark the 55th anniversary year of ECM Records.
