An evolved avant-indie rock album where experimentation and lyricism intertwine Voka Gentle—comprising twins Ellie and Imogen Mason, along with Imogen’s husband William J. Stokes—presents their latest release, *Domestic Bliss*. Having started out as a folk trio, they have boldly expanded their musical horizons with this album, arriving at an experimental and emotionally stirring avant-indie rock sound. The album is sprinkled with eccentric ideas throughout, such as runaway synth phrases and binaural recordings of ambient sounds like Morris dancers and motorcycles. The theme is “power.” While exploring its abuse, fluctuations, and essence, the album unfolds a narrative that spans history, literature, everyday life, and pop culture (such as Jude Law’s 1995 Vogue cover). Recorded in the orchestra studio at City University, the sound—which combines intimacy with a sense of scale—boasts a level of perfection that can be seen as the culmination of their approach to treating the studio itself as an instrument.
