Description:
Symphony No. 1 is a dense and powerful performance by Jurovsky, who has been the LPO's principal conductor since 2007. At the beginning of the New Year in 1909, Rachmaninoff said, "I am terribly old. I am terribly tired, and I dread to think that I am going to hell soon," Rachmaninoff wrote in a letter to a friend. The piece is based on the painting of the same name by Arnold Becklin, a Swiss symbolist painter. The ostinato rhythm in five-eighths time, which stirs up anxiety like a boatman's oars rowing to an island, gradually climaxes with fragments of the melody. The melody of the Gregorian chant "The Day of Wrath" is also heard. The middle section is in three-quarter time and sounds stable.Jurovsky had already performed the piece live with the LPO in 2004, but this recording of "Isle of Death" was made more than 10 years after he assumed the position of chief conductor, and it is a very powerful performance. Although the premiere of Symphony No. 1 was a disaster, Rachmaninoff cherished this work very much. Although it is now highly acclaimed, it is still rarely performed in concert. The London reviewer said, "Timothy Lines on clarinet and Ian Hardwick on oboe were especially fine," and the performance was a reminder of the LPO's capabilities. King International
