Named after the year of his birth, the original album was released in 2006 on PlugResearch. With prices skyrocketing on the secondary market, this reissue via his own label, Brainfeeder, is a release fans have been eagerly awaiting. The soundscape, which boldly blends jazz, Japanese synth-pop, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and distorted video game sounds, effortlessly transcends the boundaries of mere instrumental hip-hop. The beats, warm and organic yet constructed in a circular fashion, are highly addictive and grow deeper the more you listen. Fusing Madlib-esque jazzy sensibilities, a dusty groove reminiscent of J Dilla, and psychedelic textures, the sound boasts a level of perfection worthy of being called “Cosmic Underground Hip-Hop.” This is a monumental album that laid the groundwork for the aesthetic leading to his later masterpieces and paved the way for his subsequent career.
