After 12 years of instrumental albums, from chamber music, Boys Noize, collaborations with Jarvis Cocker and Plastic Man, to a Christmas album, Chilly Gonzales has had a lot on his mind since his 2011 orchestral rap work, The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales, His words, which had been lying dormant without being released, began to heat up again in early 2022, ending a long decade of psychoanalysis. Behind the wordplay and name-calling (Ron Jeremy, Marie Kondo, Genghis Khan, Philip Glass, etc.) is an ongoing tension between persuasion and confession, delusion and self-awareness, and gratitude. The tension between creativity and commerciality has been a career-long quest for Chilly Gonzalez. But is this really a rap album? Instrumental pieces such as the Stravinsky-esque "Fidelio" and the tear-jerking "Eau de Cologne" will make his words familiar to the ear while simultaneously evoking for the listener the persona of Chilly Gonzalez as a musical genius. At the age of 16, Chilly Gonzalez was dragged by his father to see a Wagner opera in Bayreuth, Germany. The young teenager was overwhelmed by the music, but understood that the composer was a monstrous human being. Out of this conundrum arose "F*ck Wagner" (M8), a song, one might say, about Kanye West, cancel culture, and the tragic humanity of all artists. This separation demands of us the freedom to say the words "Fuck Wagner" while praising Wagner's (or Kanye's) music. And so, in her native Cologne, Chilly Gonzalez is spearheading a campaign to remove Wagner's name from Richard Wagnerstrasse and replace it (as Chilly Gonzalez herself did in 2012) with the name of Tina Turner, who chose to make Cologne her home as a foreigner. She is standing at the forefront of the campaign. The term "Open the Kimono" (M5), a tech industry expression meaning "transparency," has been repurposed here to describe the artist's work. As Chilly Gonzalez says, a true artist has no choice but to express himself.Detroit OG Bruiser Wolf (signed to Danny Brown's Bruiser Brigade) is the only featured vocalist on the album; in the rhyme style "Neoclassical The album reaches a boiling point with "Massacre," a song of mixed emotions from a man who unintentionally created a "neoclassical" style in 2004 with his masterpiece "Solo Piano.
