Her virtuosity, deep insight, broad repertoire, generosity, and enigmatic playing make her an incomparably fascinating pianist. In 1955, her family moved to Europe so that she could study with Friedrich Gulda in Austria. At this time, the Argentine government supported her parents by offering them diplomatic positions at its embassy in Vienna. She won the Geneva Music Competition and the Busoni International Competition in 1957, but it was her victory at the 7th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw at age 24 that established her as a major talent. This was followed by her legendary 1965 Chopin recital (EMI Classics, now released by Warner Classics). Her prodigious virtuosity has often been compared to Horowitz. She is also famous for her anecdote that she mastered Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit" in three days after being told that it was "very difficult. Her solo career spanned a quarter century, during which time her talent for interpreting Romantic masterpieces by Chopin and Liszt was matched only by her brilliance in playing the works of 20th century masters such as Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Messiaen. Her decision to limit her playing to chamber music and concertos, however, was due to the solitude of performing alone on stage, as she explained in an interview. This path has been her career for the last few decades, and she still exudes the aura of one of the most brilliant pianists of our generation.
