A 4-hour, 91-song, 3-CD epic of American bubblegum pop from the late '60s, packed with hits and obscure cult songs. In the late summer of 1966, the Monkees' sound and concept of becoming a second Beatles was different from their artistic maturity in the pre-teen market. The Monkees' sound and concept were in the preteen market, unlike the original Beatles, who were maturing artistically. New York-based producer duo Kasenetz & Katz coined the term "bubblegum" as a term for songs that were simply exciting and calculated to excite everyone. The Cassenettes & Cutts went on to have major hits with The Ohio Express, 1910 Fruit Gum Company, and Crazy Elephant, and Jeff Barry created "Sugar, Sugar," a big hit for the Arches and a synonym for bubblegum pop. This examination of the bubblegum phenomenon includes well-known songs as well as cult singles such as Raspberry Pirates, Cartoon Candy Carnival, and The Four Fuller Brothers.The box also includes bubblegum tunes from such unexpected bands as the Electric Prunes, the Beach Boys, the Sparks, and the Velvet Underground, and truly captures and sums up the genre in a big way.
