Description:
A promising young composer is bringing a breath of fresh air to the wind ensemble world! A collection of soulful works meant to inspire the next generation. Composer Hiroaki Kataoka made his debut with “The Path of the Celestial Horse,” the required piece for the 2008 All-Japan Band Competition, and brought a breath of fresh air to the wind band world with “Tori no Shikunafune-gami.” His work is characterized by soundscapes that make effective use of percussion, rhythms that are sure to stick in your mind, and exhilarating melodies. He actively incorporates various musical styles and has composed many works that leave a lasting impression. In recent years, his works have been frequently selected by numerous ensembles as their free choice pieces for competitions, making him one of the most talked-about composers in the wind band world. The performance is by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Yokosuka Band, which received the “Colonel George Howard Award” from the John Philip Sousa Foundation in the United States in December 2014. The overflowing energy of “Glow of the Orient” and the driving “accel.” in the premiere of “Tori no Shikunafune-Kami—Small Ensemble Version”—these are absolute must-hears! The composer himself performs as the soloist in the two xylophone-featured pieces, and this magnificent collaboration is a highlight of the album. As a special bonus allowing you to experience Kataoka’s works right away, “March Viva! Sugar Road” is included as extra sheet music data. The booklet is packed with highlights, including liner notes enriched with behind-the-scenes stories. This album captures the “present” of this rising star and hints at his future growth. Brain Music
