Description:
Don Pasquale, a wealthy, elderly bachelor, is secretly looking for a bride. However, since no woman is willing to marry such a miser, he decides to leave his fortune to his nephew Ernesto—provided Ernesto marries a woman Don Pasquale recommends. But Ernesto is currently in a relationship with the widow Norina. There’s no way he’s willing to go along with such a plan. So Pasquale decides to marry himself and asks his friend, Dr. Malatesta, to find a potential bride. Malatesta and Norina have known each other for a long time, and she immediately sees right through the scheme. So they hatch a plan: “Let’s introduce Norina to Pasquale as Maratesta’s ‘demure younger sister,’ have her marry Pasquale temporarily, and seize his entire fortune.” Though Norina is actually quite free-spirited, she initially acts demure… but once the marriage is set, she reveals her true colors. Just as a thoroughly exasperated Pasquale agrees to a divorce, the truth is revealed. And so the curtain falls on the story. This is a traditional comedy. The cast is kept to a minimum, and the plot is easy to follow. Consequently, there is no doubt that the singers’ acting skills and the direction will determine the success of the production. However, with Daniel de Nies—one of today’s foremost “dramatic sopranos”—starring as the heroine in this *Don Pasquale*, there’s no way it could be anything but entertaining. With her in the role, it feels as though you could laugh off and forgive any scheme she might be subjected to. Corbellini is also truly impressive in her flawless portrayal of the slightly pathetic Don Pasquale. Clément’s tasteful direction and Mazzola’s conducting, which supports the captivating bel canto, all come together seamlessly to create this magnificent production. Naxos Japan
