Erich Jacques Wolff was a Jewish composer born in Vienna who was a close friend of Schoenberg and Zemlinsky. Before his death at the young age of 38, he composed at least 168 songs, all published and highly acclaimed during his lifetime, but rarely performed today. NAXOS has therefore begun recording the complete works. This third collection begins with the 1909 Op. 19 Lieder. The theme of a man reaching old age falling in love with an unattainable young woman is depicted, and the use of many bright tonalities symbolizing spring and youth reflects Wolff's late Romantic style. Also, "Drum sollst du dulden, Mensch For this reason, oh man," on a poem by Richard Demel, is the only song for baritone written by Wolff. Other works include those based on poems by Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor Sturm. Especially "Steinklopfer, stone-crusher," based on a poem by Evers, delicately depicts the suffering of the working class and leaves a strong musical impression.In Op. 30, a collection of 14 songs based on Daumer's translation into German of poems by the Persian poet Hafiz, Wolff attempts an oriental style of musical expression. These works by Wolff explore the depths of human emotion and are extremely diverse and profound, both musically and poetically. In this release, Hans-Christoph Bögemann sings with great skill, and Klaus Zimon, who provides a detailed commentary (in German and English) in the booklet, accompanies him superbly. Naxos Japan
