Korngold was a child prodigy who was called "the second coming of Mozart." He composed a cantata at the age of 9, and his ballet "The Snowman," written at the age of 11, was premiered at the Vienna Court Opera in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I to great acclaim. The two chamber works on this album were both written by the teenage Korngold. The Piano Trio, his first work to be numbered, is a work of confidence, and despite being written at the age of 12, it is full of bewitching melodies reminiscent of Korngold's later works, suggesting that his style was perfected early on. The String Sextet, completed six years later, is a magnificent piece with an even more refined writing style. The Sextet for Strings, completed six years later, is a magnificent piece with an even more refined writing style, and uses precise counterpoint throughout, further developing the style of Brahms' string sextet.
