Stanford's Piano Trio is "Germanic, or rather, Brahms itself. Stanford first heard Joseph Joachim play at an early age, and later encountered Joachim and Brahms in person in Bonn, where he was captivated by their music. He came to be highly regarded as a composer, and regarded chamber music as "one of the most fundamental expressions of absolute music," and wrote works full of concentration and meticulous development of themes. This album contains his Piano Quartet No. 1, written in 1879, which has experimental elements, and the moving Piano Trio No. 2, written in 1899, during his mature period. Recorded in 2014, performed by the Gould Piano Trio and others. (C)RS
