Dalbert (1864-1932) was born in Scotland and worked in Germany. He is best known as a self-taught musician who, as a child prodigy, won a scholarship to study in London and Vienna, and later became a pupil of Franz Liszt. He was also a wonderfully gifted pianist, and it is said that even Brahms was intimidated by his passionate performances of works by Liszt, his former teacher. His masterpiece is the opera "Lowlands," and the "Symphonic Prologue," written in 1924 and included on this album, is a reminder of his style that fully embraced the Romantic sentiment. It is a beautiful pastoral song that begins with the sound of shepherds playing their flutes in the Pyrenees Mountains. The "Symphony" was written when he was 22 years old, and while it shows the influence of Brahms, its ambitious experimentation has enough charm to make the listener thrill. Naxos Japan
