Description:
The previously released No. 1 and No. 3 piano quartets were masterful performances, featuring the world-renowned violinist Balakhovsky, now concert master of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the young pianist Neborshin, who performed with a superb ensemble full of tension. In the gentle No. 2, however, the four players played music in a relaxed and expansive manner. The first movement of this relatively modest Brahms piano quartet is a big work, nearly 50 minutes long, with a close-knit structure, including a rural tone in the first movement that sometimes reveals a rough minor part. The second movement is filled with the brooding beauty typical of Brahms, and the third movement, the Scherzo, which is normally a lively movement, has a leisurely atmosphere. The joyful final movement is also a pleasure to listen to, and it is no wonder that it was the most popular of the three when Brahms was still alive. Mahler's work is a study from his student days, but it is already a unique piece with the pessimism and intensity typical of Mahler. Naxos Japan
