Ward Marston reissue. Although his recordings for Columbia have been reissued several times by EMI and others, Gieseking's hard pianism comes to the fore when heard in clear, noise-free sound quality. The tight music with the young Böhm and the powerful and rich music with Walter will further raise his reputation as a Beethoven player. Gieseking's third volume of concerto recordings from the 1930s includes two Beethoven concertos, each of which is a first for him: the Concerto No. 4, recorded in only two takes on a single day in January 1939, is delicate in a way that is typical of this music, especially in the two end movements, where a light The tendency toward lightness is noticeable, especially in the two end movements. The recording of No. 5, "Emperor," was made in Vienna in 1934, and Gieseking plays it with a freshness that is not overblown in the first movement or drowned in sentimentality in the adagio movement.In the final movement, which requires little skill and is often played bluntly, Gieseking takes bouncy steps and plays it in six-eighths rather than three-quarter time.
