Ries, Ferdinand (1784-1838)

Description:

A compilation album of piano sonatas and sonatinas by Ferdinand Ries, a pupil and friend of Beethoven. Ferdinand Ries was praised by Robert Schumann in 1835 in the "New Musical Times" for his "remarkable originality. Now, 250 years after Beethoven's birth, he is attracting even more attention as one of the legators of piano music linking Beethoven and Chopin. This 6-CD box set includes works from his early years, which show the influence of Haydn, Mozart, and other classical composers, to his later works, which are reminiscent of Mendelssohn and Schumann. The music reflects the "piano sonata" genre from its heyday to its twilight. In addition, three four-hand works are included, including the Sonata in A major, Op.160, composed around 1831 and dedicated to Carl Cherny, which pursues a thick sound that approaches that of an orchestra. Although the Sonata is in A major, the music, like Schubert's works, moves back and forth between major and minor keys, and has a Romanticism-like sound throughout. Susan Kagan, who will perform the piece, is a pianist who studied at Columbia University and established the New York chapter of the American Beethoven Society in 1995 as a Beethoven scholar while pursuing research on Archduke Rudolf. His interest in the surrounding musicians also led him to work on a project to record all of Ries' sonatas beginning in 2006, which he accomplished with this complete recording.
