Alain Tanner, a leading figure in Swiss cinema, began making films inspired by the cinematic movements that flourished in the 1950s and 1960s, such as the “British New Wave” and the “Nouvelle Vague.” In 1968, he formed “Group 5” with his colleagues, bringing a new wave to the Swiss film industry. This release features two films that catapulted him into the international spotlight: 1971’s *Salamander* and 1976’s *Jonas Will Be 25 in the Year 2000*. *Salamander*, released as his second feature film, was a massive hit primarily in his native Switzerland and is the masterpiece that made Tanneur’s name known worldwide. It depicts the life of a woman who does not conform to—or rejects—societal norms and institutions, rendered with vivid imagery and a touch of mystery. The 1976 film *Jonas Will Be 25 in the Year 2000* is a discussion comedy that depicts, with a bittersweet yet lighthearted touch, the harsh realities of life after the 1960s—the era of revolution—for eight young people who lived through their youth during that time. Both films are being released on disc for the first time in newly remastered versions. This 2-disc set comes with an outer sleeve and includes a commentary booklet as a bonus feature.
