Beethoven (1770-1827)

Description:

Furtwängler's "Ninth Vienna (1951)" is now available on SACD hybrid disc! A masterpiece performance at the peak of his career, half a year before the "Ninth at Bayreuth"! There are 13 types of recordings of Furtwängler's "Ninth" (all live) as follows. (1) Berlin Philharmonic (May 1, 1937, London) (2) Berlin Philharmonic (March 22-24, 1942, Berlin) (3) Berlin Philharmonic (April 19, 1942, Berlin) (4) Stockholm Philharmonic (December 8, 1943, Stockholm) (5) Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (January 7, 1951, Vienna)(6)Bayreuth Festival (July 29, 1951, Bayreuth) EMI version(7)Bayreuth Festival (July 29, 1951, Bayreuth) Bavarian/Swedish Radio version(8)Vienna Philharmonic (August 31, 1951, Salzburg)(9) Vienna Philharmonic (February 3, 1952, Vienna)(10)Vienna Philharmonic (May 30, 1953, Vienna)(11)Vienna Philharmonic (May 31, 1953, Vienna)(12)Bayreuth Festival (August 9, 1954, Bayreuth)(13)Philharmonia (August This "Ninth" is (5) the "Ninth" with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikverein on January 7, 1951, six months before the "Ninth" at Bayreuth. The Vienna Philharmonic's graceful string singing in the third movement, the dramatic movement of the fourth movement, which is also common to the "Bayreuth disc", the power of the low strings, and the perfect ensemble of soloists and chorus in the coda are all characteristic qualities of this disc. The SACD hybrid version is the definitive version of (5) and is now available! The first movement is slow but grand in scale, the scherzo seems to run forward and backward, but the rhythmic urgency of the scherzo is firm and sure-footed, and the trio's sharp dynamism and impressive timpani technique throughout the scherzo return from the exquisite tempo stretch and contraction. The highlight is the graceful singing of the strings in the third movement. The beauty of the 1st Vn's flowing legato breathing was especially enchanting. The dramatic movement of the fourth movement also has the strong ups and downs that only Furtwängler can deliver. The Vienna Philharmonic's ability to keep up with the peculiarly fast tempo of the prestissimo at the end is also top-notch. (Toshiyuki Kobayashi, from the liner notes) The world premiere was a double LP set (FE-33) from Chetola, Italy. From the sound sources (master tapes), King Records released the LPs: K19C-287/8 and KIJC-2004, and the CDs: KICC-2291 and KICC-1263.The master this time is an analog tape (1/4" wide, 38cm/sec) produced by Milano Discos, the same as the world premiere LP (released by Chetra, Italy). The originally excellent sound quality has been further improved by the latest digital remastering at King Sekiguchidai Studio, and will be released as the first SACD hybrid disc. King International
