Description:

[Religious & Instrumental Music by Riccio, a great contemporary of Monteverdi, revived in restored and reconstructed form. Giovanni Battista Riccio was a composer active in Venice in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His career coincided with the period when Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi were active in the same region, and during his lifetime he was on a par with them. Richo, who had many aristocratic patrons, left three collections of church music after 1612. All of them were incomplete, but after painstaking research and study, they were restored and reconstructed, resulting in this world premiere recording. Riccio's work makes abundant use of the most advanced techniques of the time, as typified by Monteverdi, including concerto-style singing, the use of echo effects, and direct musical description of the text, and his lively melodies and refined expression are as vital as those of Monteverdi. The instrumental piece is a canzon learned in the style of Gabrieli, and here the string ensemble shows the virtuosity demanded by the piece. Riccardo Doni, who plays the harpsichord and conducts, is an up-and-coming keyboardist and conductor who was trained by Lorenzo Ghielmi and Jean-Claude Zender and has been the bass continuo player of Il Giardino armonico led by Giovanni Antoni since 1993. He is well known in Japan as the bass continuo player of Enrico Onofri's Imaginarium Ensemble, and his high level of ability is well known in demonstrations and recordings. He has performed with such renowned artists as Cecilia Bartoli, Ottavio D'Antone, and Isabel Faust, and especially with Giuliano Carmignola and Mario Brunello, with whom he leads Acquademia dell'Anunciata, a recording project on the ARCANA label, to worldwide acclaim. In 2024, he expanded the Accademia dell'Annunciata to create the Estravagante Ensemble. In this recording, Riccio's music is brought vividly back to life in the present day, led by four singers, all of whom are active in Europe as soloists, as well as outstanding instrumentalists. Enjoy this outstanding performance of an unknown masterpiece by a contemporary of Monteverdi. Naxos Japan
