The works of Wilhelm Friedemann, the eldest son of the great Bach, are performed on ancient instruments according to the period of their compositions. Wilhelm Friedemann was born in 1710 to a father who was a great Bach master, received a good musical education, and was a rare keyboard player. The latter half of his life is still shrouded in mystery. The quality of his surviving works, however, is proof enough of his genius, especially his Sonatas for Flute Duet without accompaniment, which were revised and published in the first half of the 20th century and praised by his contemporary composer Kilnberger as "a perfect example and touchstone. The Sonata group is a series of masterpieces in which advanced compositional techniques and subtle musical expression coexist. Although many modern instrumentalists have recorded these works, it is surprisingly rare to find a recording of the complete works on an ancient instrument.Granatiero, who has played brilliant solos on recordings by Re-Inconiti and Accademia Ottoboni, and Busicevic, who studied in Basel and is highly regarded for his improvisational playing, have several instruments of the same model and maker for two estimated periods of composition, and they play with a free and easy playing style that conveys the subtleties of the details well. The performance is very well executed, and the subtleties of the details are well conveyed. The engineering of the ARCANA label, which accurately captures the sound of the period instruments, is also dependable and makes this a very rewarding recording. Naxos Japan
