[An ambitious work combining arrangements and homage for woodwind quintet Formed in 2014 by students of the Conservatoire de Paris, Ensemble Urranos is now one of the top woodwind quintets in France, and its first release on ALPHA combines arrangements of works by Ravel and Shostakovich with Barber's masterpiece. The first release from ALPHA combines arrangements of works by Ravel and Shostakovich with Barber's masterpieces, including "Couperin's Tomb," dedicated to his friends who died in World War I, and Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, a memorial to the victims of World War II (the first recording of this arrangement), to expand the repertoire of woodwind quintets, while also adding "Summer Music," a tribute to summer in a lighter musical form. The program also includes "Summer Music," which is a tribute to summer with lighter music, and links seemingly unrelated composers like constellations. The Shostakovich piece in particular, in which the strings are replaced by a variety of wind tones, is fresh and interesting, as if it were a completely different work.
