In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), CAPRICCIO's masterpieces are being revived in three different boxes! Shostakovich is widely known for his symphonic and chamber music, and we often hear some of his popular suites and film scores. However, his songs with orchestral accompaniment are not often performed. The oratorio "Songs of the Forest," composed in 1949 as a tribute to the Soviet Union's reforestation project, is probably the most widely known. In this album, the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mikhail Jurowski presents a selection of Shostakovich's lesser-known masterpieces. The orchestra has established a rich performance tradition of Shostakovich's works under conductors such as Semyon Bishkov and Rudolf Barshai. Other works on the program include "Six Romances on Japanese Poems" for tenor and orchestra, "Suite on Verses of Michelangelo" for bass and orchestra, and "From Jewish Folk Poetry. Naxos Japan
