Marie-Josèphe Elb, a composer from Alsace, France, was impressed at the age of five when she heard Berlioz conduct "The Childhood of Christ," and studied in Paris with Saint-Saëns, Eugène Gigueux, and Clément Rollet, and later worked as an organist and teacher in Strasbourg, where she was friends with Franz Liszt and He was also a friend of Franz Liszt and Albert Schweitzer. In this album, virtuoso player Jan Lehetra presents three works by Erb. The Sonata on a Chorale Theme from the Catholic Liturgy was composed in 1905 and published in 1911. Dedicated to his teacher, Eugène Gigueux, it was acclaimed by critics of the time as a brilliant Frank-influenced organ sonata. The "20 Organ Pieces for Church Service," a collection of preludes, interludes, and postludes, was published in 1908. Dedicated to Father Matthias, organist of Strasbourg Cathedral, six pieces from the collection are presented here. The "Suite for Large Organ" was dedicated to organist Joseph Bonnet and published by the Boston Musical Society in 1920, and was also highly acclaimed, receiving rave reviews in the Musical Observer.
