Description:
A unique collection of music from Marais' last years with some of France's best-known musicians. A master of the viol (viola da gamba), the most beloved string instrument in the aristocratic society of early modern France, and conductor of the royal orchestra of Louis XIV, Marin Marais's achievements are condensed in five collections of viol works. He also took an early interest in Italian music and wrote sonatas in the Italian style for violin, a specialty of the southern musicians. The latest recording of all three of his works from "Scales and Other Ensembles," published in 1723, five years before his death, features an ensemble of some of France's finest players who have remained at the forefront of the ancient instrumental performance scene. Jun Sakai, who has played with many orchestras including Les Tarrands Liliques, Fiona-Emilie Poupard, known as concertmaster of Le Poème Armonique, and Brice Saie, who is well versed in French old music, have been recording the sounds of old instruments for over 40 years, and their subtle interpretations of the performances have been refined by Jérôme Lejeune, an engineer and musicologist who has been recording the sounds of ancient instruments for over 40 years, has recorded every detail of the performance.The "Scales," a unique work in which a small opera-like development unfolds from a simple up-and-down scale, the "Marais-style Sonata," in which the composer's individuality shines through between the Italian and French styles, and the "Bells," in which the violin performs a variety of turns on the insistent repetition of low-note shapes, are all equally masterpieces.
