Single-sided single layer disc, NTSC All Region Mary, a prostitute, seduces a sailor to board a ship from Alexandria, Egypt to Jerusalem. When she arrives in Jerusalem, an encounter with a virtuous pilgrim opens her eyes to the teachings of Christ, and she wanders for years through the desert in an ordeal of self-salvation. ...... Ottorino Respighi, active as a composer and performer in the early 20th century and best known for his symphonic poem "The Roman Trilogy," composed nearly 10 operas along with a variety of vocal, instrumental, and orchestral works that were in the vein of neoclassicism, which aimed to revive Italian classical music, and modernism of his time. One of his operas, "Mary of Egypt," was based on the script of a legend that Mary, a prostitute who lived a life of debauchery, was converted to Christianity and canonized after asceticism. Here, too, he combines an ancient musical approach (e.g., Mary's recitation with cembalo accompaniment) with the richness and splendor of modern orchestral music to create a unique world of his own. This production features a variety of elaborate designs, including the projection mapping of symbolic objects (a large gold ring, numerous crosses, etc.) by Pier Luigi Pizzi, the elder Italian director, and the silhouette of the beauty of Maria's limbs (by ballet dancer Maria Novella della Martira). The beauty of Maria's limbs is expressed by silhouettes (by ballet dancer Maria Novella della Martira) and various other elaborate designs. Soprano Francesca Dotto (Maria), who has made a splash with her precise technique and refined singing during her visits to Japan (2018 "La Traviata", 2023 "Norma" title role), and Simone Alberghini, a regular on the world stage, who will appear at the New National Theater in 2022 in the title role of "Don Giovanni". Simone Alberghini (Zosimo) and young tenor Vincenzo Costanzo (Sailor), who made his Japan debut in 2016 with "Madama Butterfly" (Pinkerton), will perform the three central roles of the work with singers familiar to Japanese audiences. The orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice, led by Manlio Benzi, whose repertoire is centered on Italian opera, provide a richly shaded performance of Respighi's opera, which is rich in stylistic variety.
