In 1939, David, an exiled Jewish physicist, and D'Elia, a black music student, meet at a historic Marian Anderson concert at the Lincoln Memorial. They fall in love and have three children together. The story is centered on racial discrimination, but also includes issues such as the atomic bombing, and depicts a turbulent half century. (translated by Ichiro Takayoshi, published by Shinchosha), is the fourth opera by Belgian composer Chris Default. The music, which intertwines Western music, jazz, and hip-hop, is the culmination of DeFauld's 20 years of compositional work. This is a wonderful live performance that is etched with the strong empathy and passion for the work of the singers, each of whom plays a major role in the story, and all the performers, including Kwame Ryan, who conducts the performance.
