Voces Suaves(Vocal Ensemble) Berlin Academy of Ancient Music (using ancient instruments) Concertmaster: Georg Kalweit Recorded: October 9-11, 2023 at St. Martin's Church, Basel Duration: 64 min. The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music is Germany's foremost ensemble of ancient instruments, which has renewed the image of Baroque music by interpreting the styles of the time in which the works were composed, and by sometimes creating strikingly impactful interpretations with great contrasts. This is the first appearance on the ARCANA label, which is currently based in Italy and has been releasing unique albums of ancient music. The appeal of this program is its carefully selected examples of works by senior German composers who are thought to have influenced the great Bach. The works include two instrumental works by Pachelbel, who was a teacher of the eldest Bach brother and a close friend of their father, as well as church concertos, motets accompanied only by basso continuo, and an early form of a church cantata. The works of Strattner and two composers of the Drese family, who served at the court of the Duke of Weimar, are very rare and valuable recordings. The works of Johann Christoph and Johann Michael, whose influence on Johann Sebastian is well known among the Bach family, as well as those of Arle and Schelle, the predecessor choir directors of Mühlhausen and Leipzig, and how their rich performance interpretations inspired the early cantatas and organ works of the "father of music" are also included. Listening to them while thinking about them will surely bring you a deeper aural experience. (Naxos Japan)
