Description:
Maria Herz, a female composer who was at the mercy of the two world wars. The world premiere recording of her recently discovered orchestral works! Born in 1878 to a wealthy Jewish family in Cologne, Maria Herz developed her musical talent at an early age. 1901 she married Albert Herz, a chemist, and moved to England, but World War I broke out in 1914 when she and her family visited Germany to attend her brother-in-law's wedding. She was not allowed to return to England and was forced to stay in Cologne with her family. Furthermore, in 1920, her husband died of the "Spanish flu. Maria's character and musical talent were admired by Klemperer, the Kapellmeister of the Cologne Opera, the Budapest String Quartet, Piatigorsky, Feuermann, Arbentrodt, Rothbout, and others, and her works were performed more and more frequently. However, with the rise of the Nazis, performances of Jewish works were banned, and her family left Germany and moved around Europe, not composing again until 1935, when she died in New York City in 1950.In order to be recognized in the male-dominated society of the time, she composed music under the name Albert Maria Herz, which she borrowed from her husband when he died. Only "Five Romances" and a Bach chaconne arranged for string quartet were published during her lifetime, but in 1995 her family donated the scores they had to the Zurich Central Library, and access to those works has been available since 2015. Some of them are included in this album. Her works, which have a rich late Romantic appearance in both sound and style, demand a high level of skill from the performers, and convey today the talent and taste of this composer who was constantly at the mercy of the social conditions of her time.
