75th Anniversary of the Bayerisches Rundfunk Symphonieorchester. Previously unreleased recordings with a splendid lineup of singers are now available on CD. The Silent Woman" was completed in 1934 and premiered on June 24, 1935 in Dresden under the baton of Karl Böhm, but was banned by the Nazis after only three performances because Zweig was a Jew. Various characters appear, including an aging ex-soldier, Lord Moroz, his nephew Henry, an opera singer, his wife Aminta (who is required to sing coloratura at a high level), a barber reminiscent of Figaro in "The Barber of Seville," and a housekeeper who is infatuated with him. After all the slapstick, the opera ends with the impressive monologue by Sir Morozzus, "Wie schon ist doch die Musik - aber wie schon erst, wenn sie vorbei ist! Music is beautiful, but what is more beautiful is when the music is over. What you hear on this CD is an excerpt (a collection of famous scenes), a session recording made the day before and the day after the public recording for television on November 6, 1960.Hans Hotter as Sir Moros, Fritz Wunderlich as Henry, and Hermann Pley as the Barber, the same splendid cast that performed in Salzburg the previous summer with Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic, will be heard singing. The conductor is Heinz Warberg, who is well known for his appearances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He has held positions in opera houses and orchestras in Germany and Austria, and has conducted the Vienna State Opera more than 450 times.
