Description:
The Frankfurt Opera House, which has garnered attention for its innovative new productions, presents Nielsen's only comic opera, "The Masked Ball"! Jeronymus, a wealthy merchant in Copenhagen, and his wife Magdelone are having marital difficulties, and he has a troublesome son, Leanda, who is absorbed in attending masked balls. Leanda falls in love at first sight with his daughter Leonora, whom he meets at a ball. Jeronymus forbids his son to go out at night, but Leanda manages to escape from the house with the help of the servant Henrik, and is reunited with Leonora at the ball. Jeronymus visits the ball in pursuit of his son. Unaware that his wife Magdelone has also come to the ball without her husband's knowledge, Jheronymus, puffed up by drink and masquerade, tries to seduce a young girl there. ...... "The Masked Ball" is an opera by Nielsen, one of the leading Danish symphonists of the modern era. While Verdi's opera of the same name is a tragedy, this is a comic opera reminiscent of operettas by Johann Strauss and Offenbach.Composed to a libretto written by Nielsen's close friend Wilhelm Andersen based on a play by Ruzvi Holbea, an acclaimed writer and philosopher of the Danish-Norwegian Confederation in the early 18th century. The music, with its flowing, accessible orchestration and lively ballet music, presents a rather different aspect from the symphonic music that made Nielsen's voice so valuable. For this production, up-and-coming director Martin G. Berger created a new German translation of the original Danish libretto. The production was created by Tobias Kratzer, one of the most popular directors on the world opera scene today, with the intention of spreading this masterpiece, which has become a national opera in Denmark, beyond national borders with an exciting production that puts the stage in a modern setting. The Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, shaken by Titus Engel, boasts a wide repertoire ranging from baroque music to contemporary opera and ballet music, and the two famous singers, Alfred Reiter (Jeronymus) and Susan Block (Magdelone), will lead the ensemble. The young ensemble members and dancers from the Frankfurt Opera will sing, act, and dance across the stage. Naxos Japan
