Bernard Haitink, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Description:

In celebration of the 2023/24 season, which marks 65 years since Bernard Haitink made his subscription concert debut with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) in 1958, the Bavarian Radio recorded the 2010 Bruckner: Te Deum and the 1993 Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 for the first time on CD. Te Deum and the 1993 Symphony No. 8 on CD for the first time. The dense and magnificent Eighth is a particular highlight. Haitink's Bruckner: Te Deum recordings include the Concertgebouw Orchestra (1966) and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1988) (both Philips/now Decca), making this his third recording. Even conductors who specialize in Bruckner do not always record this work, so it is clear that Haitink has a special feeling for this piece. Here, too, the work's grandeur and mystical beauty are expressed without regret. But the Symphony No. 8 that follows is even more impressive. There are six different recordings of the same piece by Haitink. The 1969 recording with the Concertgebouw Orchestra is based on a fast tempo, but with fine control of slow and fast dynamics, and the performance emphasizes the dramatic aspect, including some surprising accelerando by those who know Haitink's later years. The 1981 version of the same orchestra, however, is an unobtrusive and dignified performance that shows that the interpretation has entered the realm of perfection. This style has been consistent in subsequent performances, and the 1995 Vienna Philharmonic recording won a Record Academy Award. The Bavarian version is basically the same, but the tempo is slightly slower than in the other performances, and the performance has a large sense of scale and precision, as if the musicians were trying to bite into every musical idea and extract it with great precision.
