[NAC Orchestra conducted by Shelley, Mr. and Mrs. Schumann and Brahms complete, with Angela Hewitt! This is the fourth and final installment of the project to unravel the intimate relationship between the three musicians, which includes the four symphonies by Schumann and Brahms, one from each of the first two symphonies, and a work by Clara Schumann. The first disc includes Robert's Symphony No. 4, which he gave to Clara for her birthday, and Clara's "Romance"; the second disc includes Brahms' Symphony No. 4, which he sublimated by skillfully incorporating the results of his studies of Bach and other pre-Baroque works, and Clara's piano works, modeled after Bach and using counterpoint to great effect. The album also includes the piano works by Clara, who uses Bach as a model for her counterpoint. Alexander Shelley and the National Arts Center Orchestra give a very effective and full performance of these two symphonies, with fast tempi, power, and a crisp, clear expression that sings well throughout. Stewart Goodyear joins the ensemble for Clara's chamber and instrumental works, providing a lyrical piano performance, as well as a beautiful improvisation on the theme of Clara at the end of the concert.Also in Op. 22 is the virtuoso Angela Hewitt, who accompanies Yosuke Kawasaki's violin well and brings out the romanticism of the work well with her emotional expression.
