Gluck, Christoph Willibald (1714-1787)

Description:

The last unfortunate masterpiece by the great Gluck. Niquet brings it back to life with a vivid and vivid color! "Astonishing! I'm really astonished." When you hear that "he failed both in Paris and Vienna," you would think that Gluck must have lost his inspiration in his later years ......, but this was not the case at all. It was just a matter of first impressions in the midst of the fast-changing fashions of the time." (Hervé Nicquet, commentary on the original recording) Gluck's discomfort with the Italian operatic style that had existed since the Baroque period led him to establish a unique operatic style in which the entire work spins a coherent narrative with the orchestra, and he developed a style of "reform opera" that could be considered a precursor to the Wagner operas of later years. After winning the absolute trust of the Holy Roman imperial court in Vienna, Gluck also attracted attention in Paris, where he was guided by Marie-Antoinette, and became a new role model in the world of French opera. However, his last completed work, "Echoes et Narcisse," was surprisingly little performed in both Paris and Vienna, and it has been little recollected by posterity due to the impression that it was a failure, and even recordings of it are rare.Hervé Nicquet, who has been active in the revival of 18th century French-language operas, was surprised by the original richness of this important work, which had not been recorded in its entirety for nearly 40 years since René Jacobs conducted it in 1987. The music of Gluck, who has tastefully depicted the story of Narcissus, who is longing for his reflection in the water due to the curse of the gods, and Echo, who cannot express her feelings for Narcissus because she cannot speak except by parroting the words of others......, is full of colorful music that makes the most of the clarinets and other wind instruments. The music of Gluck, who has drawn out the story with great flavor, is full of color, making the most of the wind instruments, including the clarinet, and the performance by Le Concert Spiritsuelle, under the baton of Niquet, is truly lyrical. The two frontline singers are reliable in the title roles, and the female singers playing the nymphs and others convey the subtleties of the colorful music well. This long-awaited release will provide an opportunity to review Gluck's last years. Naxos Japan
