[Exciting beauty! Bach meets minimalism and improvisation] La Tempête was formed in 2015 by Simon-Pierre Bestion. They have released CDs mainly as a vocal ensemble, but they have also focused on instrumental ensembles, and have delivered an album with a dazzling string ensemble. From the first movement of Bach's first harpsichord concerto, which Bestion says "sounds like a contemporary piece," the opening of the album is thrilling, as it leads into Gretzky's concerto in D minor, which is also written in the same key. The harpsichord is played by Louis-Noël Bestion de Cambra, the younger brother of conductor Bestion and co-leader of the Ensemble Les Surprises. The use of gut strings makes the John Adams and other pieces sound very fresh.The choral work "Immortal Bach," composed by contemporary Norwegian composer Knut Nysted based on Bach's chorale "Sweet Death, Come" BWV 478 with elements of slow improvisation, is recorded twice, once for string orchestra and once a capella for La Tempéto, The tone clusters sound beautifully in this work, and only this time we hear their advanced chorus (the members doubling as an ensemble). The final piece is a small recording of a beautiful chorale that legend has it that Bach, on his deathbed after losing his eyesight, had the score transpired orally. The group has always specialized in radical programs that straddle ancient and modern music, but this time the compositions are even more exciting. Naxos Japan
