Considered the originator of the suite form in the Baroque era, most of Froberger's suites consist of four pieces (Armand, Courant, Sarabande, and Gigue), but this third collection also includes several three-piece suites without the Gigue. The content is surprisingly varied, and all are worth listening to. The music is performed by harpsichordist Gilbert Roland, who was born in Scotland in 1946. He is one of the oldest harpsichordists in Europe today, and his highly acclaimed works include Handel's Suites on the DIVINE ART label, the complete sonatas of Soler on the NAXOS label, and Rameau's Clavusan cycle.
