Description:
Berg and Mahler by Rolf Verbeek, a conductor and arranger active mainly in the Netherlands at the turn of the century in Vienna, and Camerata RCO, a chamber ensemble organized by members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, heard live as only a small ensemble and no audience and in the age of pandemics can. For Berg's "Seven Early Songs," a version arranged from the original piano score by Rainbert de Leeuw, who was also a pianist (and is thought to have referenced an orchestral version by the composer himself), and for "Four Songs," a percussionist with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and orchestral arrangement of De Mey's "Lord of the Rings" by The Four Romances uses a version by Henk de Vriehel, a percussionist with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and also known for his orchestral arrangements of De Mey's The Lord of the Rings. Mahler's Symphony No. 4 was arranged for the "Private Performance Society" by Erwin Stein, a pupil of Schoenberg. The soloists are Barbara Hannigan, a specialist in late Romanticism, New Viennese Music, and contemporary music, and the young Dutch baritone Raoul Stefani. The communication between Verbeek and the ensemble, who have been arranging various orchestral works for the small Camerata RCO since the global pandemic of 2020, is very intimate, and Hannigan and his colleagues make this excellent performance even more expressive with their expression of depth. This album was recorded at De Doolen, Rotterdam, and is a streaming version of the performance without an audience. It is a live performance that is unique in this day and age. Naxos Japan
