Georg Wilhelm Rauchenecker was born in Munich. Today his name is almost forgotten, but at the time of his career he was highly known in Europe. He studied composition under Franz Lachner and moved to France at the age of 16. 1864 saw him appointed chief conductor of the theater orchestra in Carpantola, but the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 forced him into exile in Switzerland. 1875 saw him leave the Musikkollegium, where he had previously performed church music, to become the first conductor of the Winterthurian City of Winterthur, and in 1876 he was appointed chief conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which was established in 1878, In 1875, he reorganized and conducted the Musik Collegium, which had previously played church music, as the first professional orchestra in Winterthur, and also left an important mark as a composer, city organist, instrument dealer, and educator. Of the three works on this album, all but the "Oriental Fantasy" were written for the Winterthur Municipal Orchestra (now the Winterthur Musikkollegium), which he founded. Although Rauchenecker is said to have been an ardent Wagnerian, there are no elements of theme music in his classically styled Symphony No. 1, but rather a strong orientation toward absolute music.The 21-year-old work, "Oriental Fantasy," is a concerto piece intended to demonstrate Rauchenecker's own virtuosity as an accomplished violinist.
