This album commemorates the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth. Here, along with two collections of songs by Vaughan Williams, we present songs by his pupil Elizabeth McConkie. Songs for a Journey is Vaughan Williams' first full-length song cycle. It was composed between 1901 and 1904 using poems by Robert Louis Stevenson. Although the collection is for baritone, it is also sung by tenors. Four Poems by Fredegunde Chauve, a poem by the composer's wife Adeline's niece, was composed in 1925 in his mature years, and is a technical song that shows maturity in style. McConkie's songs are largely unpublished works, composed in the decades between his studies with Vaughan Williams in the mid-1920s and his devotion to the British Modernist aesthetic in the 1960s and 1970s. Tenor James Geer and pianist Ronald Woodley continue their longtime partnership in performing the piece. Naxos Japan
