Description:
A collection of piano works by English composer and pianist Frieda Swain. She studied composition with Stanford and piano with Arthur Alexander at the Royal College of Music, where she received the Sullivan Prize in 1921. While working as a pianist, she married her teacher Alexander in 1921 and began teaching at the Royal College of Music in 1924, and in 1936 she founded the British Music Movement to support young composers and artists. She and her husband Alexander toured South Africa and Australia before World War II, giving recitals and lectures. As a composer, she left behind a vast body of works, including operas, which have been largely neglected since her lifetime. On this album, Swiss pianist Timon Alweg performs six of her works, centered around three powerful piano sonatas. These wildly energetic pieces are reminiscent of Rachmaninoff and Bartók, with hints of Celtic landscapes and Debussyian impressionism, and are a joy to listen to. Naxos Japan
