Schubert (1797-1828)

Description:

Schubert composed "The Magic Lyre" in 1820. Although ambitious, the work was severely criticized by audiences and critics at its premiere, and today only the overture, which was adapted from "Rosamunde," is known. The entire work is rarely performed. One of the reasons for this is that "the whole work is far beyond the level of the 'magic plays' that were popular at the time," says conductor Michael Lesky in the booklet. He adds, "The inclusion of the mysterious "palindromes," the use of melodrama to build tension, and the story of the "Knights of the Round Table" at the heart of the piece, are just a few of the many elements that make this production a must-see for any opera lover. There are so many elements involved that it is not easy to understand the whole story, since Schubert's complete autograph score has not survived." He continues. So, Lesky performed the "Orchestral Suite Version" by British musicologist and Schubert scholar Brian Newbold. Newbold does not necessarily follow the development of the play, but reconstructs it from a musical point of view as a coherent and varied narrative. The result is a refined work in which only Schubert's music can be appreciated. The Vienna Junge Philharmonie, founded in 1997, is an Austrian-based orchestra composed of talented young musicians between the ages of 17 and 27. The professional orchestra works on at least 10 projects and performs approximately 25 concerts each year. This year's members include two Japanese performers, Nao Kitabatake on flute and Yui Kimura on trumpet.
