The composer Karl Reinecke lived to the age of 85, which was a long life for that era. He began composing by the age of seven and continued to write music while serving as a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory and as music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; even after retiring from public office in 1902, he continued to compose until shortly before his death. His works—estimated to number anywhere from 300 to 1,000—are all charming pieces imbued with a Romantic spirit; however, perhaps due to his conservative style, with the exception of a few pieces, they have rarely been performed since his death. This album features all of Reinecke’s piano trios, spanning from his early career to his later years. The No. 1 in D major, published in 1853, shows a strong influence from Schumann; the two serenades, written nearly 20 years later around 1873, possess a rich texture; and the No. 2 in C minor, published in 1895, features an exquisitely crafted ensemble. These works reveal Reinecke’s superb compositional technique. The album also includes Reinecke’s arrangement of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for piano trio. This recording features the Hyperion Trio, founded in 1999, which—with the same lineup—has performed over 250 works, including numerous world premieres. Naxos Japan
