Description:

A new recording from the home of the master who supported the Versailles style of church music alongside Lully! A collection of works by Pierre Robert, an important figure in 17th century French church music, but rarely systematically recorded, has now been produced by the talented musicians of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. The recording was made at the Palace of Versailles. This is an album directly from the home of Baroque music. The French style, one of the two major trends of the Baroque period along with the Italian style, was nurtured by the musicians of the royal family of Louis XIV. Lully, the royal music director, excelled especially in composing ballads and brought to fruition the orthodox form of French opera, known as lyric tragedy. In this field, too, Lully's works were numerous. Although Lully's works were numerous in this field as well, the royal chapel was basically outside his jurisdiction. The foundation of this musical style was laid by Dumont, who was co-subdeacon of the chapel in the 1660s and 1680s ("music director" was an honorary position for high-ranking clergy, so the subdeacons were in effect the music directors), and Pierre Robert, the protagonist of this recording, who was about 10 years older than Lully. From a series of grand motets in the Italian concertante style, with the ensemble coloring the vivid counterpoint between chorus and solo voice, here is a selection of pieces that were sung during the Eucharistic Adoration, one of the highlights of the service. These great works, whose lyrics are taken from the Old Testament "Song of Songs," are freshly revived in a solid and rich interpretation by the French-speaking ensemble. Naxos Japan
