And the Bonus Track Is Mozart The HAYDN2032 project—which aims to perform, record, and release all of Haydn’s more than 100 symphonies by 2032, the 300th anniversary of his birth—has now reached its 10th release. The thematically curated selections on each release are always fascinating, and the thoughtful inclusion of works by other composers adds to the appeal. This time, however, the long-awaited release features three early symphonies—"Morning," "Noon," and "Evening"—which were clearly conceived as a series from the outset! Believed to have been composed in 1761, shortly after Haydn was hired as vice-kapellmeister by the Esterházy family, these works are masterpieces that incorporate a diverse range of compositional styles, designed to fully showcase the virtuosity of the court orchestra’s virtuosos and the talent of the newly appointed vice-kapellmeister. From recitatives played by string instruments to and solos performed throughout by a wide range of instruments—from the flute to the double bass—make this a series packed with highlights. While this collection poses a significant challenge even for contemporary ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico, as expected from a group of consummate musicians, delivers a performance brimming with brilliance in every detail. Not only is the sound rich with the textural quality of carefully selected period instruments, but the entire ensemble moves with the unity of a single living organism, allowing the listener to savor its flexible dynamism—a thrilling experience that fully conveys the unique charm of Haydn’s compositional style. As a sequel to Haydn’s works—in which each symphony represents one of three times of day, from morning to evening—this album includes Mozart’s “Serenata Notturna,” written for the Salzburg Music Evenings, as the piece representing “night.” Here, too, the witty, off-the-cuff improvisational passages by concertmaster Barnesi are a delight, and the vibrant sound throughout the entire recording is simply irresistible.
